Mr. Bresler has devoted the past twelve years to energy sector cybersecurity. As one of the original founders of EnergySec, he believes in the power of community and its ability to address both the challenges and benefits of new technology. His 27 year career includes military and civilian positions as well as experience in a broad range of security disciplines including: e-commerce, identity management, intrusion detection, forensics, incident response and investigations, capability maturity assessments, security risk management, IT security auditing and NERC CIP compliance.
After working in various roles at U.S. Bancorp, Hewlett-Packard, Conoco Oil and Chevron, Mr. Bresler became the Manager of Corporate Security at PacificCorp in 2001. PacificCorp is a large investor owned utility encompassing parts of six western states. He was instrumental in developing a successful security program from scratch. This included the development of PacifiCorp’s first ever cybersecurity roadmap. In addition to his technical leadership, he also guided the organization through the many challenges of creating a culture of security. His vision and leadership were integral in preparing the utility for the complexities of dealing with new security compliance regulations.
It was during this time that Mr. Bresler co-founded E-SEC NW, a grassroots information sharing cooperative of like-minded security professionals who were all navigating the new cybersecurity regulations. The volunteer effort eventually resulted in the incorporation of the Energy Sector Security Consortium (EnergySec) in 2008.
Mr. Bresler left PacifiCorp to become part of the first team of NERC CIP auditors who established the regional reliability audit program for the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) in 2009. During his tenure at WECC he participated in several audits giving him a broad perspective on compliance and security activities at utilities of all sizes. His deep technical background along with his ability to understand the business aspects of utility security operations provided tremendous insight to the audit team.
Based on his years of personal experience, Mr. Bresler possesses an excellent understanding of how technology and security integrate and affect business risk. He is a true security professional who blends his rich technical knowledge and broad business experiences to provide guidance and support to those seeking to improve their overall cybersecurity posture and decrease cyber related risk.
Stacy Bresler is a NERC-certified lead auditor for both NERC Operations and Planning (693) and CIP (706/761) Reliability Standards. He has led and/or participated in more than 50 NERC Audits. In addition to his NERC auditor certification, Stacy is a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM); Certified Information System Auditor (CISA); and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
